Marte is Named Player of the Week
Today, the International League revealed that 3rd Baseman Andy Marte is the player of the week. Marte, who was sent to the Clippers on feb. 25th after a succsessful 2008 season with the Indians, is one of the best players currently in the lineup for the Clippers. Over the past week, Marte has had some pretty amazing stats:
- .478 Batting Average (a .307 overall)
- He has hit 2 doubles, 2 home runs, and 8 RBIs
- He has scored 4 times
- He has struck out only once
- .826 SLG
- Jim Massie from the Columbus Dispatch also pointed out that Marte has 20 RBIs in June.
These are pretty impressive statistics. Too bad Marte can’t make the rest of the team better.

I’m pretty sure that Andy Marte has NEVER in his life, had a successful season with the Indians. In fact,Andy Marte has never really had a successful season….ANYWHERE. He’s a .211 career hitter in the major leagues – with 112 strike outs, in 513 at bats.

He played in 80 games and was decent last year

I don’t think I’d ever consider batting .221 with 3 home runs in 80 games a decent…..I would call that awful.

Re looking over his stats, he did not do so poorly. Look at his sacrifice numbers closer

Marte analysis – no where do I see anyone even hinting that he has been a success – instead all are calling him a huge flop, a disappointment – a bust, NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO START ahead of CASEY “FEAKIN” BLAKE!!! In baseball, the biggest state is OPS – Marte’s career OPS is .265 – guys like Albert Pujols and Manny have OPS’s over about 1.000. Above average major leaguers average OPS’s around .7700 to .8400 – Marte is is at .265!!! HE SUCKS!

Andy Marte: At one time he was considered such a talented up-and-comer, he cracked Baseball America’s top 15 prospects overall in three consecutive seasons (2004-06), and was regarded as a candidate to bump Chipper Jones to first base. Today, Marte is a little-used bench player for the Indians, out of options so he can’t even play regularly in the minor leagues if the team wanted him to, and apparently not good enough to unseat Casey Blake. A fresh start in a different organization — which would mean his fourth in the past three years — might help, but then there’s the question of Marte’s long swing, career .194 batting average and nonexistent power in the bigs. The best-case scenario might have him being the next Richie Sexson, but players like that were far more likely to pan out, say, 10 years ago than they are today. Verdict: Not by a long shot

Cleveland: The Indians have addressed only one of their significant needs, signing free-agent closer Kerry Wood. They still need a front-line third baseman, a corner outfielder with power and a mid-range starting pitcher.
Third base is the most pressing concern. The Indians would prefer to sign a free agent such as Joe Crede or Ty Wigginton rather than deal for help at the position.
They will do everything to avoid going back to Andy Marte at third. Marte, a once-heralded prospect, now qualifies as a flop. Marte has hit .211 with a .337 slugging percentage in 513 career major-league at-bats.

Three years later, it’s a similar story, in that the 25-year-old Marte’s glove is not in question, but his bat is. He has played 174 games in the Majors, including 150 with the Tribe and 80 last season, and he’s compiled a .211 average with nine homers and 52 RBIs in 513 at-bats. He has a .337 career slugging percentage and a .265 career on-base percentage.
